The role

The purpose and scope of this role have been refreshed. They reflect the ambitions of the Council and the challenges that need to be tackled in the coming five years and beyond.

The main purpose of the role is:

  • To provide leadership, strategic direction and inspiration for employees and partners to improve the quality of life for the people of Poole
  • To lead work with partners to shape and sustain Poole as a great place to live, work, learn and do business - and in particular to drive the delivery of town centre regeneration
  • To advise and support Portfolio-holders on the Cabinet and members of Overview & Scrutiny Committees
  • To work closely with colleagues on the Management Team, Heads of Service and Councillors to develop and implement the corporate strategy and medium term financial plan
  • To act as a role model for the Council’s purpose, priorities, values and leadership behaviours

The Strategic Director for Place has management responsibility for:

  • Planning & Regeneration Services (including Building Consultancy)
  • Environmental & Consumer Protection Services
  • Transportation Services
  • Tourism & Town Centre Management

The Director has a lead role in advising and supporting the Place Theme Portfolio-holders on the Cabinet and members of the Economy and Environment Overview & Scrutiny Committees.

The Place Theme Officer Group comprises of the Director along with the Heads of Service for four Units plus the Heads of Housing & Community Services and Corporate Strategy & Communications.
